Exchange 2013, Self Signed Cert's and Outlook Client Access

I have installed Exchange 2013 using the guide below up until the point of installing certificates.

I can use OWA to send and receive email both internally and externally, but cannot get an outlook client to work. I want to use a self signed cert since this is a testing only site, but can't find any good information on if I can or how to do this.

I previously followed the guide and created self signed certs using the instructions as a guide. I got to the point where Outlook would ask if I would accept the cert, but then it would give me an error saying "The action cannot be completed. The connection to Microsoft Exchange is unavailable...." or if I use HTTPS I can get to the login prompt, but get the same "The action..." error.

When it comes back to try again, it is also trying to connect to 1e36b262-727c-4015-ba9e-f6310c33ee9a@domainname.com and Mailbox:=SMTP:Administrator@domainname.com.

Any guidance on this is appreciated as I am very new to Exchange configuration and Certificates.
