Why should I use Exchange 2013 Archiving in my scenario?

We currently have Exchange 2013 installed.  We have decided to use the same disk to hold the Exchange DB's and the Archiving DB's.  It's currently setup with a 1GB limit on each users Mailbox and a 3GB limit on the Archive Mailbox. Why not just give everyone a 4GB mailbox limit and do away with the Archive DB's?  From what I understand (PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong) you can still do in-place hold on mailboxes, you can still do e-discovery, you can still set retention policies on folders you create in your main Mailbox and all folders will be viewable via ActiveSync devices.  I'm I missing anything?  I know the thoughts on putting your archive db's on a different disk subsystem but like I said were not doing that.  What are my benefits of having a separate archive DB for each user?

thanks
