Can someone point me in the right direction for beginning the process of understanding how an Outlook user connecting to an Exchange environment authenticates? I've been an Exchange admin for a number of years and this has always been kind of a mystery to me. I have users connecting directly to Exchange via domain member workstations that are not prompted by Outlook for credentials, users that are connecting via non member workstations that are prompted, users that are connecting via Outlook Anywhere that are prompted, ActiveSync, OWA, etc...
What I am really trying to get my hands/mind around is how an Outlook user's authentication process works on a domain joined workstation. When everything is working, they are not prompted by Outlook and things are working, which thankfully is 99% of the time.
