Hey all. I am in the beginning stages of planning a full hold for all items in all mailboxes for my company. The desire is that all items be retrievable for 7 years from date of creation company-wide. I know the end effect is effectively the same between the two, I am trying to decide what would be more optimal between placing all mailboxes on litigation hold or mailbox-wide in-place hold.
My questions are:
First,Is there any difference in the technical process of retaining the messages for a mailbox wide hold of either type? In other words, will both types simply deposit deleted messages/changes into the recoverable items folder?
Second,With any sort of hold enabled, if a mailbox also has archiving enabled, what is the behavior of the mailbox assistants when following the default MRM Policy? For example, currently in my environment we all have our primary mailbox and then we all have an archiving mailbox but we donot have any hold enabled at this time. We also have the deleted item retention time adjusted to 30 days before they're completely purged. Due to this, currently every night the MRM policy has the assistants move any deleted items older than 14 days from the recoverable items folder in everyone's primary mailboxes over to the recoverable items folder in everyone's archive mailboxes.
When I enable either type of hold, will the deleted content on hold in the recoverable items folder continue to migrate over to the archive mailbox from the primary mailboxes, or will the hold override the default MRM policy and keep the items in the recoverable items folder of the primary mailboxes. I am asking because I need to know if I should anticipate the databases for my primary mailboxes ballooning out or if I should anticipate this for the archive mailboxes.
Third, On the whole, what do you guys with more experience on this piece going with? Litigation hold seems easier to manage, but i would like to know if there are any compelling reasons to go with one over the other that I have missed.
Thanks all!
