Database file much larger than mail contents

I am running Exchange 2013 with a small number of test users.  The disk size of the database on disk is about 35 GB, while the size of mailbox data across all users is less than 8GB.  Why is the database file so much larger?  Secondly, is there a compression/compaction process that will recover this unused space?  Thank you!
