Online Archive Problems

Good Morning,

We ran into an issue today with a user and her Exchange Online Archive.
She decided to create the folders manually in her Online Archive, as opposed to her mailbox and letting the process do it automatically.

Now she is reporting that emails for the past 4 years are gone, and the 20+ folders she created are gone also.  Emails from 2013-2014, I understand being gone since our default retention policy is 2 years.  It is the emails from 2015-2016 that she is missing, as well as the folders she created that is causing her issue.

Is it advisable to manually create folders and move emails to the Online Archive.  Assuming that she did not change the retention policy from the default?

What are the possible ramifications for doing this?

If you create a folder and all the emails you place in there are removed by retention policy, does the folder itself get deleted also?

A restore would probably not be advisable as the Archive DB is 1TB and the restore process would run for a long time.

Client workstation:

Windows 7 / Outlook 2013

Exchange Server:

Windows 2012 R2 / Exchange 2013 CU12

Thank in Advance.

Brian Dougherty
